Birthday Photo Banner: Where the Photos Actually Fit

Emma Blake By Emma Blake19 Oct 20269 min readHappy Birthday Banner PrintableLast updated: 23 Oct 202615

A birthday photo banner needs three numbers before you print anything: how many photos fit on a sheet, how much of each photo the flag cuts off, and how long the string runs. A Letter sheet prints an 8 by 10.5 inch field, so a 4×6 photo gives you 3 per sheet and a 5×7 gives you 2.

If you are working out how to make a photo banner from prints you already own, the photos are rarely the problem. The shapes are. Among 12 photo banner files for sale on Creative Fabrica, 4 name Letter paper and only 1 gives the size of the photo itself.

Quick answer: a photo banner that fits, in five numbers.

  • Printing field: 8 by 10.5 inches on Letter, after the 0.25 inch printer margin.
  • Photos per sheet: three 4×6 or two 5×7.
  • Flag shape: 3.75 by 5 inches, a 3:4 upright rectangle.
  • Crop loss: 5 percent from a 5×7, 11 from a 4×6, 25 from a square, 50 from a horizontal 3:2 photo.
  • String: the row of flags, plus 24 inches of spare string.

To lay the photos out on screen first, the Banner Bunting Canva Frame Template lets you drag photos straight into banner frames.

Why the photos you printed do not fit the banner

You are holding two different rectangles, a photo and a flag. A 4×6 print is 2:3, a 5×7 is 5:7, and the upright flag in our guide to free printable birthday banners by theme is 3.75 by 5 inches, which is 3:4. Lay one on the other and you lose part of the picture.

The sheet is the second mismatch. Letter paper is 8.5 by 11 inches, but a home printer cannot use the outer quarter inch, so the field is 8 by 10.5. A photo that looked right on your screen can lose its edge there.

The third is the string. A banner of 24 photos runs to over 8 feet and you often need a second row. A frame template such as the Banner Bunting Canva Frame Template lets you size every flag in one move.

Count the photos before you pick the banner

A photo garland for birthday decor puts one photo on every flag, so the photo count sets the whole job.

  • 6 photos: one wall of a small room, or a table backdrop.
  • 12 photos: a first-year set, one photo for each month.
  • 24 photos: two rows of 12.

Then decide whether your banner also carries words. Happy Birthday has 13 letters. Twelve month photos plus 13 letter flags make 25 flags, and with small flags that is a row of 25 × 3.75 + 24 × 0.5 = 105.75 inches. With the Bunting Party Set Canva Frame Template you add or drop a letter frame and see the new count at once.

How many 4×6 and 5×7 photos fit on a Letter sheet

This is the birthday photo banner size the listings leave out. Inside the 8 by 10.5 field, the sheet takes these:

Photo Per Letter sheet How they sit
4×6 3 Two upright side by side, one on its side below
5×7 2 Two on their sides, stacked
3.75 by 5 flag size 4 Two columns, two rows

A 5×7 cannot go two upright, since 5 + 5 = 10 is wider than 8. Two on their sides are 7 inches wide and 5 + 5 = 10 tall, which fits under 10.5.

Photos Sheets of 4×6 Sheets of 5×7 Sheets at flag size
6 2 3 2
12 4 6 3
24 8 12 6

I print at 100 percent, never Fit to page, or your photos shrink and the flags no longer match. In the Banner Bunting Canva Frame Template each frame sits on an 8.5 by 11 canvas, so you see the sheet as you build it.

Crop the photo to the flag, not the flag to the photo

To fill a 3:4 flag, each shape loses a different share of its picture:

Photo shape What is cut Share lost
5×7, upright 0.33 of 7 inches of height 5 percent
4×6, upright 0.67 of 6 inches of height 11 percent
Square 1.25 of 5 inches of width 25 percent
Horizontal 3:2 3 of 6 inches of width 50 percent

You will see that upright photos barely notice the flag. A landscape photo loses half, which is a face cut in two if the child stands to one side.

I sort the photos before I crop, and I suggest you do the same:

  • Upright photos: crop from the bottom, the face stays.
  • Square photos: centre the face, then trim both sides.
  • Horizontal photos: slide the crop box over the face first, or leave them out and use them on the table instead.

The Banner Bunting Canva Frame Template holds each frame on its own 8.5 by 11 canvas and you can resize the frames, so a photo is moved inside the frame until the face sits where you want it.

To cut letters by hand instead, see the craft paper birthday banner guide.

How much string for 6, 12 and 24 photos

String length is plain addition: flags × width, plus a 0.5 inch gap between neighbours, plus 24 inches of spare string for the hooks.

Photos 3.75 in flags, row 3.75 in flags, string 5 in flags, row 5 in flags, string
6 25 in 49 in 32.5 in 56.5 in
12 50.5 in 74.5 in 65.5 in 89.5 in
24 101.5 in 125.5 in 131.5 in 155.5 in

Row length = flags × width + (flags − 1) × 0.5. String = row length + 24 inches.

Twenty-four photos in a single row run past 8 feet even with the small flag, so you will want two rows of 12, each needing 74.5 inches. Try both layouts on screen in the Banner Bunting Canva Frame Template before you cut any string.

Clothespins, punched holes or tape: what holds a photo

For a diy photo banner clothespins are the usual holder, but the holder decides whether the photos can be swapped and how much of the top edge it eats.

Holder Good for Watch for
Mini clothespin Photos you want to swap, no holes It covers the top edge of the photo
Punched hole Flags on cardstock that stay up Needs 0.5 inch of space above the face
Tape on a ribbon A flat, light row on a wall Lifting a photo can tear it

The clothespin is the common choice, but among the 12 photo banner files only 2 mention a clip or pin at all. That leaves you guessing, so I choose by the photo: a clothespin for prints you may swap, a hole for flags that stay up. A matching backing is quick to draw in the Banner Bunting Canva Frame Template.

For holes, cut one card template: 0.5 inches down from the top edge and 0.75 inches in from each top corner. Punch every flag through it so the holes sit in the same place, then thread from the middle of the string outward.

If the photo is printed on thin paper, glue it to a coloured cardstock backing a quarter inch bigger on each side. The craft paper birthday banner guide shows the paper weights that hold a string.

Tags for the gifts underneath share the punch size, see the free printable birthday tags.

Measure the wall before you cut the string

Your row must be no longer than the wall it hangs on. The spare 24 inches goes to the hooks, so you measure the space between the hooks, not the whole wall.

Wall width Most 3.75 in flags Most 5 in flags
48 in 11 8
72 in 17 13
96 in 22 17

You can test the count on screen first with the Banner Bunting Canva Frame Template. The check is the row formula run backwards. Eleven small flags are 11 × 3.75 + 10 × 0.5 = 46.25 inches, so they fit 48 and a twelfth at 50.5 does not.

When the count is bigger than the table, split it. A first-year set of 12 small flags needs a 50.5 inch row, so a 48 inch wall takes 11 and a 12th calls for a longer wall or two rows of 6. A 24 photo set belongs in two rows of 12 on a wall of 72 inches or more.

For the letter row above the photos, the Happy Birthday banner printable that fits Letter paper works it through.

When home printing stops: a photo banner made for you

Your home printer is a good fit for 6 to 12 photos.

You have two routes, and I would weigh them by time. The first is an editable layout. The Bunting Party Set Canva Frame Template gives Canva frames shaped like letters where you drop pictures or digital paper, so the name carries your photos too. For a single large collage, the 50 Canva Photo Collage Frame Template gives drag-and-drop photo grids on a 10 by 10 inch canvas. It works in the web version of Canva, not the app.

The second route is to hand the job over. If you would rather not print, trim and thread, a custom happy birthday banner arrives made, with your name or your photo on it.

A themed banner without photos follows the same sums, as the guide to free printable birthday banners by theme shows.

Questions about birthday photo banners

What is a birthday banner?

A birthday banner is a row of flags, letters or photos strung on a cord. You hang it over a wall, table or doorway to show the name, age or photos of the party.

Where can I get a birthday banner made?

You can print one at home from your own photos, sized to your sheet, or you can order a custom banner with your name and photos. Home printing suits 6 to 12 photos, and a made-to-order custom happy birthday banner suits a larger set.

How many photos fit on a Letter sheet?

Three 4×6 photos or two 5×7 photos. Both sit inside the 8 by 10.5 inch printing field.

How much string does a 12 photo banner need?

Row length plus 24 inches. Twelve flags 3.75 inches wide make a 50.5 inch row and need 74.5 inches of string.

Which photos lose the most when cropped to a flag?

Horizontal 3:2 photos lose half of the picture and square photos lose a quarter. Upright 4×6 and 5×7 photos lose 11 and 5 percent.

How much does a birthday banner cost?

A home-printed banner costs a few sheets of paper and a length of string, and a made-to-order banner varies by size and material, so check the listing before you order.

Key Takeaways

  • A Letter sheet prints an 8 by 10.5 inch field, so you get three 4×6 or two 5×7 photos per sheet.
  • A 3:4 flag cuts 5 percent from a 5×7, 11 from a 4×6, 25 from a square and 50 from a horizontal photo.
  • String = flags × width + gaps + 24 inches; 12 small flags need 74.5 inches.
  • Check the row against the wall, and split 24 photos into two rows.
  • A clothespin keeps photos swappable; a punched hole needs 0.5 inch above the face.
  • If you want it ready-made, see a custom happy birthday banner.
