A free birthday tag looks like a design problem. It is a measuring problem. The set prints, the tag gets cut, and then the standard punch takes the corner off the name or the tag will not slide into the frame you bought for it.
So this page sorts birthday tags free printable sets by what the download page rarely states: the real size of the tag, where the hole goes, and what one wrong print setting does to both. I did the sheet arithmetic myself.
Quick answer
Pick your tag size first, then the set. Small hanging tags run about 1.2 by 2.3 inches, six to a sheet of US Letter.
Large ones run 2-1/2 by 4 inches. Print at actual size, punch the hole in the top centre, and check one sheet with a ruler before you print the rest.
If you need a size that no free set offers, or you want to sell what you print, a free set will not cover you.
The short version: for a plain tag on a bag or box, a free PDF is enough. For your own names, your own frame, or a size you choose, use an editable Canva tag frame template and set the size yourself.
Free birthday tag sets, sorted by the size they really are
The three sets I read most closely come in three sizes: a small one of 102 tags across 17 pages, six to a US Letter sheet; a large one sold as the right size for gift boxes, bags and jars; and the Avery sticker size behind templates such as Avery 22802.
| Tag size | Tags per Letter sheet |
|---|---|
| 1.2 by 2.3 inches | 6 in the set I read |
| 2-1/2 by 4 inches | 6 by my count (3 across, 2 down) |
| 2 by 3-1/2 inches (Avery) | Set by the sticker sheet |
Here is what surprised me: six tags of 1.2 by 2.3 inches cover about 16.56 square inches, and a Letter sheet is 93.5. Less than a fifth of the page, so the stated size and the six-up layout do not sit together. Print one sheet and measure it before you cut.
A tag size is a claim until a ruler confirms it. Measure the first printed sheet before you cut the rest.
The large size does the maths the other way. A 2.5 by 4 inch tag fits three across and two down, so six per Letter sheet with a margin of waste. Bigger tags, same count, which is why neither number tells you much alone.
Of 73 gift and birthday tag pages I read, only 3 name the size of the tag itself and only 2 paper ones mention a punch or a ready-made hole. None of the paper ones states a commercial licence; PDF is named in 48. The listings sell the file, not the tag.
The 18 Gift Tag Templates page states it in the title: 90 by 43 millimetres.
Cut files that tell you the size before you print
These three put the measurement where you can read it.

18 Gift Tag Templates SVG Cut File
Eighteen tags at 90 by 43 millimetres, a clear band above the artwork, an A4 PDF beside the SVG and DXF.

Scallop Wavy Frame SVG PNG Bundle
Two hundred scalloped and wavy outlines: pick a shape, scale it to the size you measured, and the cut line is the outline.

Gift Tag Mega Mockup Builder for Canva
Thirty tag shapes in flat, floating and front views, with ribbons and eyelets, so you see where the hole sits before you print.
Where a standard punch goes without cutting the name
This is the question behind the birthday card tags printable searches.
A standard single-hole punch bites the centre of the top edge, so you cut the tag and punch there. That works when the artwork leaves a plain strip at the top, and fails when the name runs to the edge.
Before you print, check three things on the preview:
- Is there an empty band above the artwork where the hole can go?
- Is the hole already drawn on the tag, or do you add it yourself?
- Does the tag stay clear of the hole once it is cut, not only on screen?
If the hole is yours to add, reinforce it with self-adhesive hole reinforcements, as one large-tag set advises: the string then stops tearing through the paper.
The cut is the other half of your problem. Ready-made birthday tags printable sets often butt the tags together to save you cuts, which costs you the margin: cut on the outside of the line, then punch.
To skip guessing where the hole lands, the 18 Gift Tag Templates set leaves a clear band above the artwork on every tag.
Small tags for bags and boxes: the 1.2 by 2.3 inch size
This is the size behind the popcorn birthday tags free printable searches, and the right one for a bag, a box or a cup sleeve.
What the small size asks of you:
- Names of about eight letters or fewer at a readable size.
- Cardstock, which the set I read calls sturdier and more professional than printer paper.
- A hole in the top centre, since six tags butted together leave little margin.
The same set is personal use only, with no commercial use of the file, and limited to birthdays, so it will not cover a thank you tag.
For the same small size in a machine-cut file, the 18 Gift Tag Templates pack uses a 90 by 43 millimetre tag: a PDF for A4 hand cutting, an SVG for Cricut, a DXF for Silhouette.
Treat bag tags are folded, so the fold sets the size
Birthday treat bag tags free printable sets work differently: the tag is printed once, folded over the top of the bag and stapled. The size on the page is the flat sheet, and the visible tag is half of it.
This is how a tag that looks perfect on screen comes out too small for the bag top. Two checks save the reprint:
- Measure the bag top flat and compare it with the tag width.
- Decide which half carries the wording: the front shows, the back holds the staple.
A cut-and-fold tag needs no hole from you at all. Add a string anyway, and punch through both layers at once so the holes line up.
The same cut-and-fold logic runs through birthday paper keepsakes, where the fold sets the size as well.
What the tag hangs on

Birthday Gift Bag
A cut-and-fold paper bag sized for party favours, with a tag built in, so the bag top width is known before you print.

Mug Gift Box
A box built around a mug: the present that never fits a bag gets a flat lid for the tag to sit on.

SVG Bundle, 3D SVG Box Templates
Treat, favour and candy boxes in one machine-cut pack, for a dozen boxes the same size that one punched tag fits.
Print at actual size, or every tag shrinks
This is the setting that ruins free printable birthday tags for kids. Fit-to-page quietly scales the sheet to the printable area, so the tags come out smaller and the hole lands nearer the name than you planned.
Sticker-sheet sets warn about it too: one calls its template aligned for an exact fit and requires the actual size setting, or the artwork drifts off the labels.
Your routine is short:
- Open the PDF in a viewer, not a browser preview.
- Choose actual size or the no-scaling option, not fit or shrink.
- Print a single test page on plain paper.
- Measure one tag against the size on the listing.
- Only then load the cardstock.
Cutting by machine with print then cut? Turn off the bleed box: one large-tag set says so directly, and leaving it on moves the cut line. The same setting trips scored folds, which is why the pop-up card score lines need it off too.
The 18 Gift Tag Templates SVG pack ships that A4 PDF beside the machine files.
Leave room for the pen: to and from on the back
Birthday name tags printable sets leave the name to you, and the two ways of adding it ask different things of the file. By hand you need a clear band: artwork to the edges leaves no room for a pen, so look for a plain label area or a blank back and write to and from there, keeping the front clean.
Typed names need an editable file, which a static PDF is not. That is where the 75 Customizable Tag Canva Frame Template comes in: the download is a PDF with a link to the Canva frames, where you fill each tag by drag and drop. Nothing is shipped.
Two honest notes: five out of five from only 2 reviews is a thin base, and you need a Canva account.
I set an Editable Canva Frames for Loaded Tag listing aside: vintage label style with large tags, which does not suit a small birthday tag.
| How you add the name | What the file must offer |
|---|---|
| By pen | A clear band or a blank back |
| Typed | An editable template |
A single name sticker for a party? The free set covers it. Names on a dozen tag shapes? The editable route.
Editable frames, so the size and the name are yours
All three open in the free version of Canva; what differs is the tag shape they hand you.

75 Customizable Tag Canva Frame Template
Seventy-five frames filled by drag and drop, with the tag size set on the canvas by you.

Gift Tags Canva Frames Template
Drop in a pattern or a photo, or one flat colour with the name typed on top. Works in free Canva.

Polaroid Photo Canva Template Frame
A photo tag: the frame holds the picture, the white strip under it takes the name.
What the free version does not give you
| What you need | Free printable set | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| A tag size of your choice | One fixed size | Editable Canva frames |
| Typed names on every tag | Usually a static PDF | Editable Canva frames |
| Printing to sell | Personal use only | A licence that allows it |
| Tags made to order | Not possible | A print shop |
The licence comes first: the set I read is personal use only, and another asks for an email sign-up before it hands over the rest of the files. Then the size, fixed and not editable to suit your frame.
If the tags are for guests and you want them made to order with the name already on, a print shop will do it: custom birthday gift tags start from a template and come back printed and cut.
The 18 Gift Tag Templates pack above is the middle road for a craft machine: five out of five from 3 reviews, better than two and still a small sample, so read the preview.
Past the plain hanging tag

For the jobs a fixed-size PDF cannot take: a long message, a name that will not fit, a box that is the present.

Editable Canva Frames for Loaded Tag
Blank frames for the large loaded tag in a vintage label style. Take it when your tag carries a sentence.

Personalized Floral Letter Monogram SVG
One floral initial instead of a name, for the tag too small for eight letters. Cuts or prints at any size.

Skimmer Hat Box SVG
A round keepsake box shaped like a straw boater: the tag hangs from the ribbon, not a flat lid.
Making the card too? 3D birthday cards made in one evening raise the same cut-and-fit questions, and the 3D birthday card supply list checks the paper first. Cutting by machine, the laser cut birthday gift tag files cover that route; envelope fit matters if the tag goes inside a card, and night-before paper crafts is for a rushed evening.
Questions people ask before they print
What size are standard birthday gift tags?
There is no single standard. Small hanging tags run about 1.2 by 2.3 inches, larger ones 2-1/2 by 4 inches, and sticker-sheet tags 2 by 3-1/2 inches.
Where does a standard hole punch go on a tag?
In the top centre. Leave an empty band above the name so your hole does not cut into it.
Can I print these tags on plain paper?
Yes. Cardstock is sturdier and looks more professional, so use it for anything that hangs.
Why do my printed tags come out smaller than the listing?
Your print dialog was set to fit or shrink. Choose actual size and print one test page first.
Can I sell tags I print from a free set?
Not from the ones I read: the personal use only line rules it out. Read the licence on each set you download.
Do I need a cutting machine?
No. Scissors and your punch are enough for the free PDFs. A machine only helps with the SVG packs.
Are these tags only for birthdays?
The set I read is limited to birthdays. For thank you tags, including any free printable birthday thank you tags, check the file description before you print.
Want a tag you can size yourself? Start from the Canva tag frames, or order custom birthday gift tags with the name already printed.
Key takeaways
- A size on a listing is a claim. Print one sheet at actual size and measure it.
- Small birthday tags run about 1.2 by 2.3 inches, large ones 2-1/2 by 4 inches. Pick the size before the design.
- Punch the hole in the top centre, and leave a clear band above the name.
- Free printable sets are personal use only and fixed in size. An editable template fixes the second limit, a print shop fixes the third.
