How to make a 3D pop up birthday cake card, step by step
This is the method, and it’s the same whether you cut it by hand or by machine.
- Fold the base. Score the 5 x 7 card down the middle and crease it hard with a bone folder or the back of a spoon. A soft crease is the reason cards sag open.
- Cut the cake tiers. Three rectangles with rounded top corners, each one narrower than the one below by about half an inch. Cut them as one piece if you can — separate tiers never line up.

Cut lines and score lines: why the fold never showed up on your machine
This is the single most common failure, and it isn’t your machine.
Pin itAn SVG carries shapes, not instructions. A cut line and a score line look identical in the file — both are just paths. What tells the machine to crease instead of slice is how those paths are assigned in the software: cut, score, or draw. If the designer didn’t separate them into layers, every fold line arrives as a cut line, and your cake comes off the mat in pieces.
How to check before you waste card stock: load the file, and look at the layer panel. If everything is one colour and one operation, the score lines aren’t set.
